This document provides information about supported operating systems, hardware configurations, software requirements, installation combinations, security configurations, and expected scalability for deployments of Microsoft® Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 SP1.

Supported Operating Systems

The tables in this section outline the supported operating systems, by operating system version, for each MOM 2005 SP1 component. There are two tables for each operating system version; each table outlines support for a different set of MOM components.

Note

There are known issues related to running MOM components on a 64-bit computer. The MOM 2005 Web console and MOM Connector Framework (MCF) require ASP.NET 1.1, which is a 32-bit application. Even if ASP.NET 1.1 is installed on a 64-bit computer, you must configure IIS 6.0 to run in 32-bit mode.
IIS 6.0 supports both 32-bit mode and 64-bit mode. However, IIS 6.0 does not support running both modes at the same time on a 64-bit version of Windows.

Important

Installing MOM 2005 SP1 On A Domain Controller - You can install any MOM component on a Domain Controller with the following restrictions:
- The MOM database and MOM Reporting Database must be on the same computers.
- If the Management Server is on a Domain Controller, you cannot have another Management Server in that management group.
- Product Connectors must be configured using the steps described in "Using the MCF or MMPC on a Domain Controller" section of the MOM 2005 Deployment Guide.

Minimum Hardware Requirements

This section outlines the minimum and recommended hardware requirements for each MOM component. If you want to install more than one MOM component on the same computer, follow the highest minimum hardware requirements for any of the combined MOM components.

To Install All MOM Components on One Computer, You Must Have:

Pentium-compatible 550 MHz dual-processor or higher
1 GB of RAM (4 GB or higher recommended)
1 GB of available hard disk space (For Reporting, much more drive space might be needed)
CD-ROM drive (if installing MOM from this computer)
Network adapter

To Use the MOM 2005 SP1 Management Server, You Must Have:

Pentium-compatible 550 MHz processor or higher (dual Pentium-compatible 450 MHz processors or higher recommended)
512 MB of RAM (1 GB or higher recommended)
5 GB of available hard disk space
CD-ROM drive (if installing MOM from this computer)
Network adapter

To Use the MOM 2005 SP1 Database, You Must Have:

Pentium-compatible 550 MHz processor or higher (dual Pentium-compatible 450 MHz processors or higher recommended)

A best practice is to use a dedicated computer for the production MOM Database.

To Use the MOM 2005 SP1 Reporting Server, You Must Have:

Pentium-compatible 550 MHz processor or higher (dual Pentium-compatible 450 MHz processors or higher recommended)
512 MB of RAM (1 GB or higher recommended)
200 GB of available hard disk space to install Reporting Server and the initial reporting database
Note
- As your reporting database grows you will require more space. It is recommended that you plan for database growth and factor in a higher space requirement on the computer when you install Reporting Server.
Network adapter

To Use the MOM 2005 SP1 Administrator Console and Operator Console, You Must Have:

Pentium-compatible 500 MHz processor or higher (Pentium-compatible 1 GHz processor or higher recommended)
128 MB of RAM (256 MB or higher recommended)
150 MB of available hard disk space
Windows 2000-compatible video graphics adapter capable of displaying 1024 × 768 resolution with 24 bit color or higher recommended
Network adapter
Mouse or other pointing device

To Use SQL Server Reporting Services, You Must Have:

Pentium-compatible 550 MHz processor or higher (dual Pentium-compatible 450 MHz processors or higher recommended)
256 MB of RAM (1 GB or higher recommended)
10 GB of available hard disk space
Network adapter

For Each Agent-Managed Computer, You Must Have:

Pentium-compatible 200 MHz processor or higher (Pentium-compatible 300 MHz processor or higher recommended)
128 MB of RAM (more memory might be necessary depending on which Management Packs you use)
The size of the installed agent software is approximately 3 MB. It is recommended that you allocate 100 MB of available hard disk space for agent use (more hard disk space might be necessary depending on which Management Packs you use)
3 MB of additional hard disk space is necessary for each management group that a multihomed agent is added to

Minimum Software Requirements

Every MOM component requires a supported operating system. For a list of the supported operating systems for each component, see the Supported Operating Systems section earlier in this data sheet.

This section outlines the minimum software requirements that you must have for each MOM component beyond the operating system. If you want to install more than one MOM component on the same computer, you must install the prerequisite software for all the combined MOM components.

Important

Verify that all appropriate security updates, hotfixes, and service packs have been applied to the operating system and to applications that are required for deploying MOM components. You can do by visiting the Windows Update website at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=1623.

In addition to a supported operating system, you must have the following software:

To Use the MOM 2005 SP1 Management Server, You Must Have:

Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.8.1022.0 or later
Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1

To Use the MOM 2005 SP1 Database, You Must Have:

Microsoft SQL Server™ 2000 Standard or Enterprise Edition with Service Pack 3.0a or later

SQL Server cluster

You can install the MOM 2005 SP1 database on a SQL Server cluster in Active/Passive mode or in Active/Active mode.

Note

Installation on an Active / Active cluster requires using the MOMCreateDB.exe tool which is available in the Support Tools directory on the MOM 2005 SP1 CD.

Installing multiple MOM Databases

You can install more than one MOM Database on one computer. The computer can be in a cluster or not. Each database must be on a different SQL Server instance and have different data and log file locations. To install more than one MOM Database on one computer you must use the MOMCreateDB.exe tool, which is available in the Support Tools directory on the MOM 2005 SP1 CD. While installing more than one MOM Database one a single computer is available, this practice in not recommended.

To Use the MOM 2005 SP1 Administrator Console and Operator Console, You Must Have:

One of the following browsers:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 with Service Pack 1
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 with Service Pack 2
- Netscape 4.78 or later

To Use MOM 2005 SP1 Reporting, You Must Have:

SQL Server 2000 Standard or Enterprise Edition with Service Pack 3.0a or later
SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services SP1

Note

SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services requires the WMI Windows Installer Provider and ASP.NET. If you are installing MOM Reporting on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, you must manually install the WMI Windows Installer Provider and ASP.NET Windows components.

- A browser that can render reports in HTML 3.2 and HTML 4.0.
- Microsoft Visual Studio® .NET 2003, or Integrated Developer Environment 2003 (if you want to customize or create reports)

To Use the MOM 2005 SP1 Agent, You Must Have:

To install the MOM Agent, there are no additional software requirements beyond a supported operating system. However, if you import any Management Packs that have Managed Code Responses, you must install the Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1.

SQL Server Cluster

You can install the MOM 2005 SP1 agent on a SQL Server cluster. The agent must be installed on all physical nodes of the cluster.

To Use the MOM 2005 SP1 Connector Framework (MCF), You Must Have:

A supported operating system for the Management Server on which you install the MCF
Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1
Microsoft ASP.NET Windows component

Using the consoles over a slow link

You can use the Web console over a link as slow as 64 KBps, however the Administrator and Operator consoles are not suitable for this type of connection and is not supported. It is recommended that over slower links, that you use Terminal Services to connect to a computer that has the Administrator or Operator console and that is connected over a faster link to the Management Server. Satellite connections are also not supported.

Supported Installation Modes and Setup Types

Table 7 indicates the installation modes and setup types that MOM 2005 SP1 supports. Unless otherwise noted, these are for new installations of MOM 2005 SP1.

Supported Security Configurations

This section details the supported configurations that involve the use of firewalls separating MOM components or configurations that involve MOM components being installed in a non-trusted domain or a workgroup. For more information about firewalls and non-trusted domains in your MOM environment, see the Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Security Guide.

Installing Management Servers, MOM consoles, MOM Database Servers, or MOM Reporting Servers in a workgroup is not supported.

Using MOM 2005 SP1 With a Disjointed DNS Namespace.
To discover and push agents using MOM 2005 SP1 in a Disjointed DNS Namespace:
- Using the MOM Agent Install/uninstall wizard, provide Domain\Computername or NetBIOS name format
- Using the Create Computer Discovery Rule dialog, provide only the NetBIOS computer name or the Domain name and the NetBIOS computer name for the Domain name and Computer name fields respectively If you attempt to use MOM 2005 SP1 over a disjointed DNS namespace,
The following features are not available:
- Push install when using the "Browse" functionality to choose a target machine
- Push install when using the DNS FQDN computer name
A "disjointed DNS namespace" is a DNS infrastructure that includes two or more top-level DNS domain names. For more information about this, see "Configuring Name Resolution for Disjointed Namespaces" in the Windows Server 2003 documentation, under Deploying Network Services.

Using MOM with Firewalls

Your IT environment might use firewalls that separate MOM computers. Depending on your topology, this separation might present an issue. Table 6 shows when using a firewall between MOM 2005 SP1 computers is supported and when it is not.

Using MOM with Non-Trusted Domains or Workgroups

Your IT environment might be composed of both trusted domains and non-trusted domain, or workgroups. Depending on your topology, this separation might present an issue. Table 7 shows when a connection across a trusted/non-trusted barrier is supported for MOM computers.

Support for Installing Agents Across a Trust Boundary - Agents can be push installed to a non-trusted domain in most environments except to a Domain Controller. Also, because of the large number of configuration combinations available in Active Directory, not all have been tested thoroughly and push-installing agents to target computers in your specific environment might not be possible. If this happens the agents must be installed manually.

MOM 2000 SP1 and MOM 2005 SP1 Interoperability

There are varying degrees of interoperability between MOM 2000 SP1 and MOM 2005 SP1 components to support rolling upgrades in a distributed MOM environment. Table 14.1 and Table 14.2 describe which MOM 2000 SP1 components can communicate with which MOM 2005 SP1 components.

If any MOM 2000 SP1 server components are installed on a computer, you cannot install the MOM 2005 SP1 agent. If a MOM 2000 SP1 agent is installed on a computer, you cannot install any MOM 2005 SP1 server component. Table 15 indicates the MOM 2005 SP1 Setup behavior that occurs when you attempt to install MOM 2005 SP1 components on a computer that has MOM 2000 SP1 components.

No Support List

This section outlines items that are not supported by MOM 2005 SP1.

There is no support for any changes to the MOM Database or MOM Reporting Database schema.
There is no support for Alpha.
There is no support for Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6).
There is no support for bidirectional, complex script languages, such as Arabic or Hebrew.
There is no MUI release for MOM 2005 SP1.
There is no support for running MOM without the MOM 2005 SP1 Management Pack.
There is no support for multiple MOM Databases connected to a single MOM Reporting database or for multiple MOM Reporting databases connected to a single MOM Database.
There is no support for more than one MOM Reporting Database per management group.
There is no support for running Computer Discovery to install an agent on the same computer where you are running Computer Discovery.
There is no support for installing MOM 2000 SP1 agents after the MOM environment is upgraded to MOM 2005 SP1. MOM 2000 SP1 agents are only supported during the upgrade process. Agents on Windows NT 4.0 are not supported in MOM 2005 SP1. These agents must be uninstalled and these computers monitored agentlessly. For more information, see the Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Deployment Guide.

There is no support for moving a MOM deployment from one domain to another. If this type of change is required, you must uninstall all the MOM components (for example, agents and management server) and then reinstall MOM on the new domain.
